Kannur Airport's Second-Phase Expansion: What It Means for Aviation Careers in North Kerala

Kannur International Airport just posted its busiest year yet. Over 15.2 lakh passengers passed through the terminal, and more than 10.5 lakh of them flew internationally — a 15% jump from the year before.

That growth is happening while the airport is only getting started. Kannur's second-phase expansion is now in motion, and it changes more than runway length and terminal capacity. It changes how many people North Kerala's aviation sector will actually need to run the place.

If Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad, or anywhere close enough to call Mattannur your local airport describes where you're based, this is worth paying attention to. Aviation careers in North Kerala have mostly meant moving to Kochi or the Gulf for opportunities. That's starting to change.

What Kannur's Second Phase Actually Includes

KIAL's development plan splits the airport's growth into phases, partly to keep upfront costs manageable and partly to bring in revenue as each stage goes live. The second phase covers six specific upgrades:

• Runway extension to 4,000 metres
• Terminal building expansion to handle 2,500 passengers at peak hour
• Apron expansion adding 24 more aircraft bays
• A new rapid exit taxiway
• An international cargo facility
• Solar power infrastructure across the airport

Land for the runway extension has already been notified for acquisition, over 245 acres in nearby Keezhallur village, at a combined cost of around ?900 crore for land and rehabilitation. State officials have said they're working to keep the process on schedule, though a firm completion date for the runway hasn't been made public.

Why the Passenger Numbers Matter for Job Seekers

An airport doesn't add bays, cargo space, and peak-hour capacity for passengers who aren't coming. KIAL's managing director has said talks are underway with SpiceJet, Fly91, and Star Air to add domestic services, with routes like Pune–Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar–Kolkata being planned. Fly91 is also expected to start Goa–Agatti flights out of Kannur.

On the international side, eight foreign carriers have shown interest in operating from Kannur, and there are already talks for direct flights to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The airport is still waiting on official point-of-call status from the central government. That's the approval that lets foreign airlines run full international services here instead of connecting through another Indian hub first.

Every one of those additions needs staff. Check-in counters, ground handling crews, ramp coordination, baggage systems, customer service desks. None of that runs itself.

An MRO Facility Is Coming to Kannur Too

One correction here: an earlier report on this project called Kannur's upcoming facility “Kerala's first” MRO unit. That's not accurate. Cochin International Airport has run an EASA- and DGCA-certified MRO facility since 2021, operated by Air Works, and CIAL is currently expanding it with a new hangar. What Kannur is set to get is the state's second maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility, and its first for the northern half of Kerala. The airport already sits on the largest land area of any airport in the state, which is a big part of why it can support something on this scale.

An MRO operation isn't only about licensed aircraft engineers. Facilities like this run on logistics coordinators, stores and inventory staff, safety and compliance documentation support, and ground coordination between technical teams and airline operations. Those are roles aviation and airport management graduates train for, and North Kerala hasn't had this kind of local demand before.

The Cargo Terminal Opens a Different Career Track

The planned international cargo facility matters just as much as the passenger-side upgrades, maybe more for anyone looking at long-term stability. Cargo operations need people who understand IATA cargo documentation, customs coordination, warehouse handling, and freight booking systems.

Students tend to overlook this track because cabin crew and pilot training get most of the attention. But cargo and logistics roles hold up through the year. They don't ride on tourist seasons, and Kannur hasn't had a dedicated cargo terminal until now.

The Roles Worth Preparing For

Based on what's actually being built, here's where the real hiring is likely to show up over the next few years:

• Airport and ground operations staff
• Ramp handling and baggage services
• Airline customer service and check-in agents
• Cargo and logistics coordinators (IATA cargo handling certification helps directly here)
• Cabin crew, as new carriers add Kannur to their route network
• Travel desk and ticketing staff supporting the new routes (GDS skills on Amadeus, Galileo, or Sabre matter here)
• Support roles around the upcoming MRO facility, including stores, logistics, and compliance documentation

None of these need a move to Kochi or the Gulf to get started anymore. That's the real shift happening at Mattannur.

Getting Ready Before the Roles Open Up

Training takes months. Airport hiring, once it starts, tends to move fast and in batches. Students who finish IATA-recognised courses, airport and airline ground service training, or cargo handling certification before roles are actively advertised are usually the ones who get shortlisted first.
